It would be better if you save your natural tooth. It will give you a better result than anything artificial and will last longer if treated properly. If the tooth is very badly damaged and is difficult to save, then only you can get it extracted and go for an implant.

Dear Patient, please provide full details of your problem/decayed tooth.
Because it depends on the % of crown structure lost and severity of the infection. If the infection is more or is there any abscess you may have to go for removal of the tooth and go for Implant.

Always try to save your natural teeth. So root canal if possible is good

This is a question of debate in most dental conferences too.
It will depend on the amount of tooth structure destroyed by decay and how well it can be restored post root canal treatment .
Certain parameters which help the clinician decide whether a RCT should be done or extraction with implantation be attempted are amount of sound tooth structure left , whether all margins of the remaining tooth structure are above or below the gum level ,presence or absence of draining pus around the tooth ,etc .
Based on such parameters the dentist will take a call and help u decide .
From your point of view ,just ask the dentist ,according to him what is the 5 yr survival rate of this tooth post RCT and then take a call .
Hope this helps .
