PAST HISTORY : nephrotic syndrome
Dr. Isha Deshmukh answered : 11 years ago
Hello,
please refer back to a nearest pediatrician as long duration steroid treatment requires evaluation and monitoring.
As Nephrotic syndrome is considered, this disease affects children and resolves (usually) by adolescence eg..12 yrs.
Continuous prednisolone treatment is not required as diseases process involves remission phases also. Any sort of infection can precipitate nephrotic syndrome, like URI, UTI, Acute gastro-enteritis,Febrile illness. Treatment includes management of infection if present and steroids till Urine albumin values are negative for three consecutive days.
So, consultation with nearby pediatrician is necessary for your child as he is on Continued treatment for 20 months.

Your child has "steroid-dependent" Nephrotic syndrome.
If not already, do consult a Paediatric Nephrologist (Kidney Specialist) soon.
Your child must be having many adverse-effects due to this continuous steroid therapy.
May have to start other "steroid-sparing"medications and may plan for other investigations, Kidney Biopsy to find actual cause other than minimal change disease.
Wishing your son a speedy recovery.
