As cardiologist I can tell you that metformin is not contraindicated in patients who have heart failure, on contrary, it controls blood suger, lowers levels of cholesterin and so it protects patient's heart vessels. The only conditions when metformin is absolutely contraindicated is acute miocardial infarction and nonstable angina! But, there exists another thing that needs to be considered, metformin has side effect called lactic acidosis, which itself can cause arrhythmias and some other symptoms especially if patient has acute congestive heart failure; liver or kidney problems increase the risk of lactic acidosis. So, metformin is not absolutely contraindicated in patients who have atrial fibrillation or heart failure, but decision should be made individually and since your husband have both heart failure and Afib, better to control his blood glucose level with other hypoglicemic medications, visit endocrinologist for more details!
