Hello,
If you had the routine child vaccines done and the last buster dose of tetanus vaccine within the last 5-10 years you do not need any tetanus protection as you are already protected.
If you have not had the last buster dose of tetanus vaccine done within the last 5-10 years than you will need the Td vaccine or tetanus toxoid vaccine, whichever you find will do.
You have to have it within the first 72 hours after the scratch to have better protection.
If the area gets red, swollen or painful, infection might be suspected and there is a need for antibiotics so in that case you will need to talk with your doctor to have a prescription.
I hope this is helpful and answers to your questions but please feel free to write us for any concerns.
Kind regards,
Antoneta Zotaj, MD
